Tap your inner brewmeister in Westmont

From the Courier Post

Sick of Sam Adams? Bored by Bud Light?

The Brew Your Own Bottle (BYOB) home-brew supply store in the Westmont section of Haddon Township offers beer lovers the tools to brew at home. The store houses a vast assortment of brewing supplies and offers courses to instruct home-brewers on how to concoct hundreds of different varieties of beer.

“There’s a huge selection,” said BYOB owner Brett Mullin. “. . . I supply everything I possibly can.”

Mullin took an interest in brewing eight years ago and opened BYOB in June after a shoulder injury ended his career as a carpenter. He is the only BYOB employee, which he said is beneficial because “(customers) know they’re getting the same person every time.”

“A lot of my customers come in just to talk and find out ways they can better their beers,” Mullin said.

BYOB sells yeasts, hops, grains, extracts and a wide selection of brewing equipment.

Customers brew specific beers by purchasing beer-making kits.

The most popular BYOB beer, Mullin said, is Indian Pale Ale (IPA), followed closely by Belgian Tripel, a light beer with 8 to 9 percent alcohol content, and Pumpkin Spice Ale “because people are getting into the seasonal beers,” he said.

The supply store also sells wine kits including Chianti, Merlot and chardonnay.

Mullin also has begun holding classes for aspiring beverage makers at BYOB. He teaches beer-brewing, wine-making and, for non-drinkers, soda-making classes. Class sizes range from one to five students — people can either attend with their friends or alone.

“(The classes) are for brewers of all experience and levels,” Mullin said.

Working with the public gives Mullin a welcome chance for “interaction with the people, and seeing their excitement when making their first beers.

“I love teaching them something they’re going to use in the future,” he said.
